Broadview Heights is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 15,967 at the 2000 census.

History

Indians occupied the territory that Broadview Heights rests on today until 1811, when the first white man, Seth Paine, settled on the territory. He was sent by Colonel John Breck as a surveyor of the land and was given a compensation of 200 acres (0.81 km2). The land that Colonel Breck sought over was called “Brecksville Township,” and today the cities of Broadview Heights, Brecksville, and North Royalton make up the land. The township consisted of 21.28 square miles (55.1 km2), and it was sold for $1.52 an acre.

In 1829, a plank road was constructed from Wallings Corners to the Cleveland city limits. In 1840, there were several gristmills, one cheese factory, four saw mills, one tannery, and three distilleries along Chippewa Creek. Early telephone service was handled through a manual switchboard at the Harris home.

On November 30, 1926, a vote was held to recognize the village of Broadview Heights. The results were 101 people for and 7 against the new village. A few years after they built a city hall and established a part-time Fire Department.

The Broadview Developmental Center was a psychiatric hospital built in 1939 and demolished in 2006, except for the newest portion, which was preserved as city hall and the recreation center.
